Artist Statement ( Catherine Gill 2014 )
Every landscape holds a trace of past landscapes: people passing or standing where we now stand, allowing us to make our own marks with reverence for theirs. The landscape embodies the outer world of the place and the inner world of the artist. The apparent permanence now becomes an impermanence, changing by the minute as the marks are made, changed forever by the new memory of being there, and leaving only a trace of the moment before, and a possible hint of what is next. I can feel that trace of the past, in the motion, the shapes and the colors. In a fever of initial drawing I try to record the basic shapes and rhythm with line on the wet paper. Then the watercolor paint is applied, quickly with color changes and keeping a mind to register what I feel with each movement of the brush. Chalk pastel is then put into the wet watercolor washes, allowing it to dilute and become part of the watercolor wetness, adding texture, strong pigment and more line. These layers build up on top of each other, mimicking the layers of pastlandscapes, what was before becoming what is now. Catherine Gill has lived and worked in the Pacific Northwest of the United States for 30 years. She paints on location in watercolor, oil, and pastel, and is also a printmaker. Catherine teaches painting and printmaking in her studio in Seattle, as well as throughout the United States and many other countries. Her artwork and current list of workshops, dvds and videos can be viewed on www.catherinegill.com. Her artwork has been exhibited nationally and throughout the world. Catherine is co-founder of Art Partners International, dedicated to bringing together artists and art of different cultures.
