Art Statement
Growing up in a large family we learned stories about the people whose eyes, whose mouths and even whose tempers we had. Many of these people were in photo albums that my grandmother, a serious amateur photographer in the early 1900’s, had captured in formal and informal settings. Only later did I discover that many of the people in the story were long dead, but because of their photos and the vivid stories about them, they lived in our imagination. Now, at family celebrations with my sisters and brothers, our grandchildren linger for stories of living and dead family members, and we see old images played out on our siblings aging faces. My work addresses the permanence and impermanence of traits of appearance, of temperament and of narrative and how they play out through decades in a family.
